About Mauritius:
Mauritius is an incredible beautiful island nation located in the southwestern Indian Ocean. It lies about 900 km east of Madagascar and is part of the Mascaranes group of Islands. Though discovered by the Portuguese in 1505, the Dutch colonized the incredible tourist destination of Mauritius in 1638, and named the island after Prince Maurice of Nassau. It was later ruled by the French and the English. Many languages are therefore spoken in Mauritius - French, English, Creole, Hindi and Urdu. The Asian languages are spoken due to the large immigrant population who made the journey to the incredible Mauritius to work on the sugar plantations on the island during colonial times. Mauritius is also known as the erstwhile home of the extinct flightless bird - the Dodo, which was hunted by settlers and sailors until it no longer survived. Conservation laws now protect rare creatures on incredible tourist destination Mauritius, such as the Mauritius Pink Pigeon.
