Sydney: This cosmopolitan city is best known for its landmark harbour with its distinctive landmark - the arches of the Sydney Opera House. Host to the 2000 Olympic Games, Sydney is a dynamic and busy city, with a dazzling skyline, a busy harbour and great beaches, including the world famous Bondi Beach. Melbourne: Located on the banks of the Yarra River, the capital of Victoria, was originally the location of Aboriginal settlements. By 1840, it was a busy town and grew further as a result of gold mining. People from all voer the world made trhe journey to Melbourne and its outskirts in search of gold. Melbourne is today a cosmopolitan town, with people of many nationalities adding to its charm. It is also known for its many beautiful parks.
Brisbane: The third largest city in Australia, this busy city in Queensland is popularly called Bris Vegas by its residents, because its sunny weather makes it a popular holiday destination. It is the arts capital of Queensland, and has many museums, galleries, concert auditoria, theatres and movie halls.
Gold Coast: Located 80 km south of Brisbane, this city - the seventh largest in Australia, is known for its coastline with fabulous beaches and ideal conditions for surfing. Not surprisingly it is also called Surfer's Paradise. Surfers journey to its beautiful beaches from around the world to enjoy the pleasure of riding the waves here.
Great Barrier Reef: The world's largest natural coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's natural treasures. It is the longest natural feature on Earth stretching more than 2,300 km along the northeastern coast of Australia. It extends from the northern tip of Queensland down to Bundaberg. It is home to many rare species of coral, and various forms of marine life.
Uluru: Formerly known as Ayers Rock, this monolith is Australia's best-known natural landmark. The giant rock which glows red in the sunset is sacred to the Aboriginal people and is an important part of their dreamtime legends. Situated 280 km southwest of Alice Springs, in Kata Tjuta National Park, the I.6 km high rock can be climbed by adventurous tourists. You can also take a walking tour around the rock. While on your journey, Aboriginal guides will explain the significance of Uluru in their culture. There are many Aboriginal sacred sites, rock formations and stunning landscapes in this national park. The Olgas or Kata Tjuta, are a striking group of 36 dome-like rock formations, up to 1,701ft (546m) high, which cover an area of 35km and like Uluru, are an unforgettable sight at sunset, the rocks reflecting the setting sun and changing colour from ochre to maroon.
Wildlife in Australia: Australia has many unique forms of wildlife. From Kangaroos, wallabies and cuddly looking Koala bears, to the spiny anteater or Echidna and the amazing Duck-billed Platypus - the only mammal that lays eggs. There are also many forms of bird life including cockatoos and various water birds near the coast.
The coast also has many forms of marine life including, fish, dolphins, whales and sharks. Some beaches carry warning signs of possible shark attacks. Observing the unique wildlife of Australia, is sure to be an unforgettable part of your journey in Australia.
